Business Travel
Business travel can be an infrequent thing or a way of life for some business people. Some people work a whole lifetime and never have to do any business travel and some people spend most of their time week in and week out travelling for business. How much business travel you do depends on your job and the needs of your company. I don’t know if business travel can ever be a real pleasure but I do know it can be a real grind. If you are in a job that requires a lot of business travel and it keeps you on the road for three weeks out of every month, then it is very difficult to maintain a family life for any kind of quality social life if you are single. So many fathers who do a lot of business travel miss so much of time the of their children’s lives. If you are never home, all the important moments and milestones in your children’s lives happen when you’re not there. I guess it’s a little better now with email and digital photos, but Business Travel can really rob a person of the precious family time.
Business people who have to travel a lot somehow convince themselves of the importance of what they’re doing so they can justify the loss, but if they really take an honest look of how important their career is verses the importance of a real family life then I don’t think they could spend so much time on the road traveling for business. You see them in all the airports with their bluetooth headsets and their laptop computers and their blackberry communications device while trying so hard to maintain the illusion that what they do matters, that it is important enough to miss their children growing up. That it is important enough to make them strangers in their own families. Business travel sucks you in. Business travel is hectic and complicated. You have to rush through airports and worry over missed connections. You have to handle things on the run. You have to talk to the home office and handle important matters over the phone from busy waiting rooms and crowded airport terminals. With business travelers it is all so very serious and time critical that you just get caught up in it and you don’t stop to think, “Wait a minute, what is all this business travel for? How important is this business travel? Should I miss so much of what really matters in life just so I can travel for business?
Maybe someday soon technology will advance enough to make business travel obsolete. Wouldn’t it be nice if the only business travel anybody had to do was walk downstairs to their home office and send their holographic image on business travel.
