Electronic Data Collection Enhances Research Studies

For many years, researchers have conducted studies for clients in business, education and medicine. These researchers have collected data with instruments that would provide them valuable information on which they could base informed conclusions. The research studies were carried out with proven models and the data was collected with valid instruments in controlled conditions to ensure that the conclusions were worthwhile and helpful. In this age of technology, electronic data collection is used to replace methods that were previously used by the researchers. Electronic data collection should be based on sound principles so it provides valid, accurate information to the researchers.

Data collected by traditional methods was useful only if it was collected properly so experts developed rules that should be followed to ensure that the time, money and energy expended to collect the data was not wasted. If the data collected was contaminated in any way, the conclusions reached based on this data were also contaminated. Some of the studies cost millions of dollars which would be wasted if the data was faulty. Researchers are now able to use electronic data collection tools in order to gather the appropriate information, and these new electronic devices have enhanced the opportunities for researchers. The electronic data collection methods must use the old principles to ensure that valuable data is collected.

Electronic Data Collection Uses the Most Modern Devices

In previous studies, researchers sent questionnaires with written questions on old fashioned paper. The researchers now send CD's for the respondent to insert into their computer to answer the questions presented. The researchers now send questionnaires in email messages that use to be presented in person or on paper through the regular postal service. One great advantage of the new electronic data collection techniques is the reduction of time and energy expended. Previously, researchers would have to go through each of the questionnaires to retrieve the information. The electronic data collection methods can eliminate some of the time and personnel needed to compile the data from these questionnaires.

There are other data collection methods that cannot be duplicated with electronic means so some exercises to collect data must be done in the old fashion ways. Researchers cannot have a face to face interview with someone on the internet. However, the researchers can replicate this method with web cameras and internet connections. The interview is not exactly the same so researchers must determine if the circumstances contaminate the data in any way.
