Managing a Home Business

If you are thinking of setting up a home business for additional income…or perhaps as your primary source of income, you need to consider the importance of managing a home business. Depending upon the complexity of the products or services you offer, managing a home business may be quite simple or may require some of the practices of managing any business.

If you are operating a simple service as a sub-contractor, doing direct mail, for instance, managing a home business may be relatively simple. If you are earning sufficient income to report it, however, you will need to be aware of all possible deductible items, including a portion of your home and cost of utilities. There should be no material costs, however, to consider in managing a home business of this sort.

If you are performing services as a home business, managing a home business varies according to the type of service offered. If you are offering cleaning services, for example, you need not only to keep an inventory of supplies (unless the customer supplies all supplies) but bookkeeping which records the costs of all supplies. For services outside the home, the cost of transportation to and from work is part of managing a home business. If adequate records are not kept, the absence of records in managing a home business can result in your working for inadequate income.

Sometimes very simple bookkeeping is adequate in managing a home business, but nevertheless records must be kept of all expenditures. In some cases…for instance doing specialized woodworking or carpentry out of your home, prices must be obtained and quotes given to customers as part of managing a home business. Records of all such quotations must be kept, as well as bookkeeping records of expenditures. Acccurate income records are also part of managing a home business.

If you are preparing and selling goods as a home business….baking bread and cakes, for example, accurate records of ingredients purchased is part of managing a home business. The cost of gas or electricity must be factored into the records in managing a home business of this type, as well as work time involved. If prepared goods is delivered to the customer, the cost of transportation is part of managing a home business. Without accurate records when managing a home business the result may be that you are working for nothing
